Matthew Perry was born in Williamstown, Massachusetts to Suzanne Marie (Langford), a Canadian journalist, and John Bennett Perry, an American actor. His ancestors include English, Irish, German, Swiss-German and French-Canadians.

Perry grew up in Ottawa, Ontario, where he became Canada's top junior tennis player. However, after moving to Los Angeles to live with his father at the age of 15, he became more interested in acting. Not only did he appear in several school plays, but he also remained an avid tennis player.Perry was ranked 17th nationally in junior singles and third in doubles. After graduating from high school, Perry intended to enroll at the University of Southern California. However, when he was offered the lead role in the television series “Boys Will Be Boys” he jumped at the chance and began his acting career. Perry appeared in the hit comedy The Whole Nine Yards (2000) as the neighbor of a killer, played by Bruce Willis. His other feature films include Chasing Fools (1997), Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon (1988), She's Out of Control (1989) and Parallel Life (1994).He also starred opposite Chris Farley in the buddy comedy Almost Heroes (1998) and the romantic comedy Three to Tango (1999) opposite Neve Campbell. Perry lives in Los Angeles. In his free time he enjoys playing ice hockey and softball.

Perry held Canadian and American citizenship. He dated Yasmine Bleeth in 1995, Julia Roberts from 1995 to 1996, and Lizzy Caplanfrom 2006 to 2012.In 2009, Perry was a guest on The Ellen DeGeneres Show where he presented Ellen DeGeneres with an Xbox 360 system and a copy of the video game Fallout 3. The gesture led to game studio Obsidian Entertainment casting him in Fallout: New Vegas.In 2018, Perry spent five months in a hospital for a gastrointestinal perforation. During the hospital stay, Perry nearly died after his colon burst from opioid abuse. He spent two weeks in a coma and used a colostomy bag for nine months. Upon being admitted to the hospital, doctors told Perry's family that Perry had a two percent chance of survival. He was connected to an ECMO (Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) machine, which breathed for him.In November 2020, Perry became engaged to literary manager Molly Hurwitz. The couple ended their engagement in 2021.

Perry became addicted to Vicodin after a jet-ski accident in 1997, and completed a 28-day rehab program that year.His weight fluctuated over the next few years, dropping to 145 pounds (66 kg) due to pancreatitis.He entered rehab in February 2001 for an addiction to Vicodin, methadone, amphetamines, and alcohol.While filming Serving Sara in Texas, he suffered severe stomach pains and checked into Marina del Rey's Daniel Freeman Hospital. Perry later estimated he had spent $9 million to get sober. He revealed that due to his addiction issues, he did not remember three years of the time he was acting on Friends, between seasons three and six.In 2011, Perry lobbied Congress as a celebrity spokesperson for the National Association of Drug Court Professionals in support of funding for drug courts.Perry received a Champion of Recovery award in May 2013 from the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy for opening Perry House, a sober living home in his former mansion in Malibu, California.Perry relocated the rehab center in 2015.
