Colonel Harland David Sanders, the legendary founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC), was born on September 9, 1890 in Henryville, Indiana. His father died when he was only six, leaving young Sanders responsible for cooking and caring for his siblings. Sanders' early years were marked by a variety of jobs, ranging from working on farms to serving as a streetcar conductor in New Albany, Indiana. The Birth of KFC

Sanders' career took a unique turn when he became a gas station operator in Corbin, Kentucky. At the gas station, Sanders began serving meals to travelers, initially to supplement his income. What started as a small operation soon grew in popularity as travelers flocked to the Sanders gas station to enjoy their delicious Southern-style fried chicken. 

Realizing the potential of his culinary creations, Sanders decided to concentrate on his restaurant business and opened a restaurant called Sanders Court & Café in 1930.Here he perfected his secret blend of 11 herbs and spices that would become KFC's signature flavor.


Overcoming Adversity

Despite his initial success, Sanders faced significant adversity. When they had to close their North Cabin restaurant, they were left with just a few savings and $105 in Social Security benefits. In dire need, he began franchising his chicken concept and traveled the United States looking for restaurants.

Talent cannot go unrecognized, as is the case with Harland David Sanders.The tables turned and restaurant owners began visiting Sanders because they were intrigued by his recipe. After realizing the potential of his recipe, he opened the first KFC restaurant in South Salt Lake, Utah in 1952.

Today, KFC is the second largest grocery chain with a presence in more than 25,000 restaurants in 145 countries. With sales of over $2.83 billion in 2022, Colonel Sanders has made chicken lovers happy with KFC.
